The Volkswagen Phideon is the company's newest luxury model, but it's not destined for most of the world. Which means it isn't the successor to the very old VW Phaeton luxury sedan.

In fact the Phideon, announced on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show, is a Chinese-market model that, according to VW, "positions itself as both a sports saloon as well as a chauffeur-driven limousine."

In the hopes of reaching that part of the Chinese luxury market, the Phideon offers a chauffeur mode that lets rear passengers control infotainment functions up front, but also treats the driver to an Active Info Display, according to the company.

The Phideon is billed as a four-door coupe, but it looks a lot like a larger version of the European-market Passat. It isn't small, as VW says the Phideon is more than five meters long.

Developed in Germany, the Phideon is scheduled to go into production in the third quarter of this year.
