As the first M2s find their way into the dealerships and the hands of their lucky owners, the inevitable comparisons with its bigger brother are starting to surface.

Fans are already considering the new M2 the spiritual successor of the original E30 M3, thanks to its compact dimensions and relatively accessible price tag.

Powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six producing 370PS (365hp) and 465Nm (343 lb-ft) of torque, the BMW M2 is capable of tackling the customary 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 4.5 seconds (4.3sec with the DCT gearbox).

The M4 uses a different 3.0-litre straight six, in this case with two turbos, that pumps out 431PS (425hp) and 550Nm (406lb-ft). In the naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration, it is just 0.2 seconds faster, stopping the clocks at 4.3 seconds (4.1 seconds with the DCT gearbox).
